What If I'm Not Photogenic? (A Boudoir Photographer's Honest Answer)

Confident woman poses in dramatic lighting

I hear this one all the time.

"I'm not photogenic." "The camera hates me." "Every photo of me looks terrible."

Here's my honest answer: “unphotogenic” is a myth. It's not a trait you're born with. It's not something some women are and others are not. It's just a word people use when they haven't yet been photographed by someone who actually knows what they're doing.

Think about the photos you hate of yourself. Candid shots from a weird angle, bad lighting, awkwardly tucking your chin, someone caught you mid sentence at Thanksgiving. That's not you, that's just a bad photo. There's a difference.

What boudoir photography actually is is a highly directed, expertly lit, intentionally crafted experience. I'm not pointing a camera at you and hoping for the best. I'm watching the light, adjusting your pose, telling you exactly where to put your chin and your hands, and coaching you through every single shot. You don't have to know how to pose. That's my job.

My clients who swear they're not photogenic? They are consistently the ones who cry when they see their gallery. Not because they look like someone else, but because they finally see themselves the way the people who love them do.

The nervousness you're feeling right now? That's normal! I've worked with over 1,000 women, and I promise you: the fear does not last past the first five minutes of your session. After that, it's just fun.

You don't need to be photogenic. You just need to show up. I'll handle the rest.
